March 23rd isn't just another day on the calendar for Mash Direct; it marks a momentous occasion—our 20th Anniversary! Today, we begin celebrating two decades dedicated to delivering the freshest, farm-to-fork vegetable accompaniments directly to family tables nationwide.
After 30 years of supplying produce in Comber, Northern Ireland, Martin and Tracy observed the evolving market dynamics and consumer trends towards convenience and healthy eating. This observation led them to explore opportunities to add value to their farm's vegetables. Walking around the aisles of his local supermarket, Martin was struck by an idea to make fresh vegetables grown on the farm more convenient for consumers, blending traditional farm freshness with modern-day consumer needs.
With encouragement from friends and family, Martin and Tracy began experimenting with cooking, packaging, and marketing to produce ready-made fresh champ, utilizing Martin's grandmother's cherished recipe. This venture took shape in their newly established small factory on the farm, designed to embody a traditional cooking ethos. The factory boasted several pieces of innovative equipment, including a unique masher and steam cooker, to ensure the vegetables were steamed gently. This process was critical to retain the nutrients and capture the freshly harvested flavour and texture, epitomizing the farm-to-fork philosophy.
The factory's inauguration marked the beginning of an exciting journey, but not without its challenges, such as choosing a suitable name that reflected the vision. After deliberating over various options, including Mash Farm Products, Ready Mash Direct, and Good Mash Company, a consensus was finally reached with Mash Direct, a name everyone agreed on.
The introduction of Mash Direct's first product - Champ, to local independent stores and its delivery by rented vans each morning was just the beginning. Responding to growing customer demand, Mash Direct expanded its product line and presence, evolving from a local gem to a household name across Northern Ireland. Today, Mash Direct boasts over 40 farm-fresh vegetable products, including Carrot and Parsnip, Broccoli with Cheese Sauce, Green Cabbage, Potato Rosti, Croquettes, and fan favourites such as Skinny Fries, Beer Battered Chips and Onion Rings. These products are now staples in major supermarkets like Tesco, ASDA, Morrisons, and Sainsbury's, relished by customers throughout the UK and Ireland.
In 2015, we reached a significant milestone when we committed to making our products gluten-free. This move helped widen our appeal and cater to a broader audience, including those with coeliac disease, gluten allergies, or simply seeking healthier eating options.
Over the past two decades, Mash Direct has received over 220 accolades, a testament to our unwavering commitment to quality, farming, sustainability, business, and innovation. A highlight of our journey was in 2017 when Mash Direct was named Best Food Company in the UK at the Food Manufacture Excellence Awards in London, a remarkable achievement that stood out even among the largest companies in the UK and Ireland. Additionally, our Beer Battered Onion Rings and Beer Battered Chips have amassed 32 Great Taste Awards since 2007, with our Beer Battered Onion Rings clinching a Gold at the Blas na hÉireann Awards 2023, further cementing our legacy of excellence.
